Applied Knowledge is a band built on decades of underground music experience, blending post-punk intensity with sharp lyrical storytelling.
Fronted by Peter Cortner (ex-Dag Nasty) and anchored by bassist and songwriter Sam Pinola, the band crafts songs with a raw, deliberate edge—layered guitars from Scotty Why and Joe C., driven by Jay’s dynamic drumming.
Their sound is steeped in the urgency of DC’s hardcore roots and the brooding atmosphere of post-punk, with lyrics shaped by the noir grit of James Ellroy’s prose.
Recorded with J. Robbins at Magpie Cage Studios, their debut release, Half of Everything Else, is a study in tension, perspective, and the weight of experience.

“Intelligently structured songs run the course of the album that is entirely fresh but sits with you in a familiar way”
Rivot Magazine, June 2025
Their debut album, "Half of Everything Else ," produced by J. Robbins , is a manifesto of contrast between melody and harshness, where each note seems to question whether light still makes sense.
"We won't notice it anyway, so fuck 'em!" Confidence or defiance? No matter! ‘Applied Knowledge’, the EP, is as short as it is disturbing, as catchy as it is brittle.”
Daniel Hector, OX Fanzine March, 2025
There’s much to unpack but without it coming across as overbearing. much to unpack but without it coming across as overbearing. It’s an album that keeps on giving, one which is intriguing and outstanding. –Rich Cocksedge
